India-Pakistan Conflict: May 2025 Update
Date: May 9, 2025
Background
On April 22, 2025, a deadly attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, primarily Hindu tourists. India attributed the attack to Pakistan-based militant groups, leading to heightened tensions between the two nations.
India's Response: Operation Sindoor
In retaliation, India launched "Operation Sindoor" on May 7, targeting alleged terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The operation involved precision airstrikes on nine locations associated with groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. India claimed the strikes were focused and aimed at dismantling terrorist networks.
Pakistan's Retaliation
Pakistan responded by claiming to have shot down five Indian fighter jets and several drones. On May 8, Pakistan reported downing 12 Indian drones that allegedly intruded into its airspace, with one drone striking a military facility near Lahore. Pakistan also launched drone and missile strikes targeting Indian cities, including Jammu, though India reported intercepting these attacks using its S-400 missile defense system.
Civilian Impact
- Pakistan reported 31 civilian deaths from Indian missile strikes.
- Indian-administered Kashmir saw 15 civilian fatalities due to Pakistani shelling.
- Thousands of civilians have been displaced along the border regions.
Diplomatic Developments
Despite the hostilities, there have been reports of communication between India and Pakistan at the National Security Council level. Pakistan's ambassador to the U.S. confirmed such contacts, emphasizing the need for de-escalation. However, Pakistan's Defense Minister warned of a "clear and present" nuclear threat if tensions continue to rise.
Indus Waters Treaty Suspension
Amid the military tensions, India has begun work on hydroelectric projects in Kashmir, suspending the decades-old Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. This move has been criticized by Pakistan, which views it as a potential act of war and has threatened international legal action.
